HIMSS 2010: That’s a Wrap
Cynthia Porter, President
March 15, 2010
After numerous hours of walking, talking, running, dining and more walking and talking, HIMSS 2010
came to a close. It was a great show. I got to talk with numerous clients and prospects, catch up
with old friends and colleagues, and came away feeling the healthcare IT industry is, like HIMSS,
always moving, changing and above all, exciting. Yes, tradeshows can be fun.
We received great feedback on the recent Porter Research and
Billian's HealthDATA webinar, "
The
Road Traveled: Providers' Perceptions of ARRA Legislation from Inception to Meaningful Use"
(yep, those words again). (You can download the white paper from that webinar
here.)
It was also nice to catch up with the folks at Healthcare Informatics, for which we'll be compiling
their annual list of the
Top
100 Companies in Healthcare IT.
I think most everyone will scream if they hear the phrase "meaningful use" one more time. As
a fellow attendee and friend mentioned to me recently, you were hard-pressed to find a presentation
that didn't contain those two words. It seemed that those with the budgets to buy did so in small
doses in hopes of meeting the minimum "meaningful use" requirements about to be enacted.
I also know I wasn't the only one who noticed that many vendors had trouble fitting their
sales pitch to the sales prospect - one message does not fit all. You should know your solution
well enough to spin it in various ways. Hint #1: Just take a look at the title on your visitor's
badge!
And despite the hive of activity that seemed to be constantly humming on the show floor, it
seemed that several vendors and products weren't gaining any traction. Hint #2: You need to do your
homework and lead generation prior to the show to ensure the right people stop by your booth.
Another colleague echoed the popular complaint of the Georgia World Congress Center's layout.
Exhibitors in Hall C, such as Porter Research and partner Billian's HealthDATA, were a bit
overlooked by attendees who had trouble finding the "secret passage" connecting Halls A and B to C.
And from what I've heard, it's no secret that the GWCC's food court area was woefully
unprepared for HIMSS visitors - long lines, food shortages and cranky customer service. That was
not the case at our Customer Appreciation Luncheon, however. No lines - just a big thanks to those
thinking of working with us and those that already do.
This was my 18th HIMSS, and I must admit I feel they are getting too big. My feet certainly
hurt more than in years past. But the friends I got to see, the hugs in the middle of the hallways,
seeing new faces and being so proud of what Porter Research offers makes the show one of the most
memorable events of the year. I thank all of you that took the time to meet with Porter Research
and Billian's HealthDATA, especially those that ventured over to our booth to learn more about how
we can help you acquire the best market intelligence to make the best business decisions.
